Genealogical research
The records held in our archives can be searched in our research room. Family research and genealogical data collection is assisted by qualified staff who speak several languages. Like other archives, we do not carry out detailed research for individuals. We strive to make the documents held in our archives accessible, help with the use of online databases and provide genealogical advice to our researchers.
In our research room we have available: birth, marriage and death registers (most of them from present-day Hungary), 18th century county censuses, lists of Holocaust victims, Budapest survivors' lists, online databases and research reference books.
In Hungary, Jewish civil registration was introduced in 1851, after several more or less unsuccessful attempts. Two copies of the registers were kept, the first of which remained in the custody of the rabbi and the second filed with the competent local archives. Civil registrations were introduced on 1 October 1895, after which denominational registers were used for official purposes only in exceptional cases. Civil registers are also held in the regional archives. All pre-1895 denominational registers have been microfilmed and are available for consultation in our Family Research Center.
